Top Ingredient Trends in 2021

In the new era of skin care, functional cosmetics are rising rapidly because of their "ingredients". Natural, safe, simple ingredients, and outstanding efficacy have become consumers' main demands for beauty products.

More and more consumers are becoming "skincare fanatics", and their preference for ingredients cannot be underestimated. Which functional ingredients leads the way in the hottest sector in the beauty industry?  What new ingredients will quickly seize the top position in 2021?

1. New Ingredient

CBNData and Harper’s Bazaar co-released the "2020 China Beauty Consumption Trend White Paper" and pointed out fish oil, a nourishing health ingredient, is gradually being used in beauty and skin care products. The natural ingredient cannabis leaf, the chemical ingredient lactose acid, etc., were widely searched on internet, becoming popular new ingredients.

Fullerene, a new antioxidant ingredient, is inserted more rapidly in traditional skin care products. With its strong antioxidant properties, it has been promoted as a "super" ingredient and appeared in more skin care products.

2. Natural and Clean

The concept of "Clean Beauty"- the focus of skin care, has become a mainstream label in the beauty market globally. Clean Beauty is the next step in the pursuit of being natural and organic. Natural, organic, and non-harmful ingredients have also begun to develop into the mainstream trend of color cosmetics.

It is worth noting that young people especially environment advocates are more willing to pay for natural and safe ingredients. The consumption of skin care products that include natural and plant ingredients has increased considerably. According to surveys, amongst the hottest claimed ingredients, the fastest growth ingredients in terms of proportion in the first half of 2020 are natural plant ingredients.

CBNData shows that the consumption growth rate of natural plant skin care products of Generation Z in the past year is much higher than that of other generations. Among them, natural plant formulas such as fruit acid, aloe vera and tea tree have become very popular.

3. Accurate Efficacy

The efficacy of beauty products needs to meet the diverse needs of consumers. There are endless stream of functional products such as oil control, acne repair, whitening, anti-wrinkle, anti-aging, anti-allergic repair, and the needs for these functional ingredients to perform well.

Consumers have shown an attitude of excellence and carefulness towards skin care products.  Attention towards repairing, soothing, anti-wrinkle, anti-allergy, and anti-acne products continues to grow, and the market competition is especially fierce. The growth rate for ingredients with repair and anti-aging functions has been leading the way, and repair ingredients for "sensitive skin" and "mask face" have become the new focus in this segment of the market.

Part. 1 Anti-aging Gaining Momentum

The anti-aging market is booming. The market research company Zion Market Research reports that the global anti-aging market reached US$191.7 billion in 2019, and Forbes data believes that China’s anti-aging market has a potential of 100 billion in the future.

Consumers with advanced awareness of anti-early aging, from face to eyes, from anti-winkle to antioxidant needs are emerging. Anti-aging has become the product that consumers are most looking forwards towards. 45% of the female respondents said that they will increase their investment in anti-aging in the coming year. Anti-aging ingredients such as Bosein and fullerene have become big hits.

Caffeine has high antioxidant activity, which can help improve the overall health of the skin, effectively combating the sagging skin and refining facial wrinkles, and becoming an effective anti-aging ingredient.

Part. 2 Sensitive Skin, Anti-allergy Ingredients Surging

Sensitive skin problems are still one of the biggest challenges. IResearch found that Chinese women are increasingly demanding skin care products with natural ingredients. When women with sensitive skin choose cosmetics, they are mainly concerned about the skin's repair function and whether the ingredients are natural and non-irritating. At the same time, 53% of respondents believe that natural ingredients in anti-allergic skin care products should account for at least 60%.

In the sensitive skin care segment, consumers prioritize skin repair ingredients and products that strengthen skin’s barrier.

Part. 3 “Mask Wearing” = “Mask Face”

Affected by the long duration of mask wearing during the pandemic, related skin problems have also increased significantly. Data shows that from the beginning of 2020, online keyword search of “wearing mask" increased exponentially, and the consumption of skin repair products increased by more than 60%.

Wearing masks for a long time causes series of skin problems such as skin sensitivity, redness, acne, and enlarged pores, which have stimulated consumers' attention. Young people look forward to "immediate" skin repair effects, and products with immediate effects.

Mintel Global Product Database (GNPD) shows that in the past five years, new products focusing on calming/soothing skins have grown globally. It increased from 4.5% in 2015 to 6.1% in 2019, and further increased to 6.3% in the first half of 2020.
